What is an Au-pair?
The word Au-pair is a French word that mean, "on equal terms". Au-pairs originally looked after children and did light housework in exchange for room, board and language lessons. Au-pairs have the opportunity to live in a new country and gain cultural, language, practical household and child care experience while the family also benefits from the presence of a "cultural baby sitter" for their children and themselves.
European law stipulates that Au-pairs should not be younger than 17years. A current medical certificate of the Au-pair is also necessary. An employment agreement should be made in writing between the Au-pair and host family, with conditions of employment clearly defined. The Au-pair should receive pocket money (exempt from tax) and have enough free time to study. The Au pair should not be expected to work more than five hours a day and have at least one full free day a week.
